I was reading a book where famous people wrote their favorite poem, which was overall enjoyable for me to read. I like that poem about "I must go down to
the seas again," and the Yeats about the "golden apples of the sun" which was open to interpretation, but movingly beautiful, and even Robert
Frost's "road not taken."
But I gotta tell ya- I read every poem by Shakespeare, and I finally realized - I don't understand Shakespeare AT ALL. I can't make sense of a single word he says!!I don't understand his poetry, his plays or a single line of his Olde Englishe soliloquies.
Hey I'm not stupid. Not really. I just can't make sense of the language or what he's talking about or his lengthy metaphors- not a bit. I even took a course in English lit and passed it. But I can't make sense of him. I don't know why he's considered the world's greatest writer if maybe only a handful of college professors at Oxford a couple of centuries ago could make sense of him. I sure don't.
